I want to answer your question very sincerely. In case you want to know if all and sundry people in India are 'highly evolved' and/or spiritual, I would love to give you an account of my experience. I can specially relate
to it because this has interested me a lot recently, in wake of both
recent violence in our country and recent desires/peace that I experienced in this land, which is east to river Indus - and so is called India.
Well, let us see... we indeed have plenty of spiritual-historians, who love to extol about our spirituality and dwell more on past than present.
Public Space Sadhus: We have plenty of sadhus, who beg for alms and food and an even
larger segment of population (me included), who utterly ignore these sadhus. Recently, one of them gifted me and other co-passengers a deluge of swear words, when we refused him money. Few minutes later, a young couple gave him some grease. I remember he held their feet and spoke very sweetly to them. He sat at their feet for around 10 (long) minutes. My brother and I laughed, cautioning ourselves.
Some of them might be very genuine, who knows? In that case, our utter disregard for them seems pretty unfortunate!
Lecturing Good Folks: I also notice a large section of people around me, who are very good at lecturing (including me) about virtues, ethics, yamas, niyamas, dharma, etc and then practice violence, untouchability, and pretense (sadly and truly including me). I see on an every day basis people, who bow their heads in places of worship and soon return home as violent patriarchs.
May be this all divine-leela too?
Young Spiritual Giants: I know some folks here, (me included) who on account of their little yoga/meditation/etc. practices consider themselves to be spiritual. Few cool experiences later every other person seems to have their kundalini 'activated', an inner child, or all-love consciousness . Well, as of now I don't have yogic- super-powers to know the truth of these claims. But the prevalence of Kundalini-activated folks seems to be much higher now than it was many years ago (i.e., before yoga became sexy in West).
Over-feeding Chelas: Oh yes! Oh yes! We also have tonnes of Guru, who would live very austere and simple life, if it were not for their overly worshipful devotees. I have only heard about this, so please take it with ten grains of salt. These devotees are said to feed their Guru oily and sweet food in 3-4 feet diameter thalis (plates) and give them lots of money and gold - Gold! Even our government can not inspire people enough to liquidate their Gold assets!
Can you imagine how much pain of maya, over-eating and obesity their Gurus accept for the sake of their devotees? Strange are ways of love!
The outrightly outrageous Gurus: And, yes we do have some of them here too. The Gurus, who earn bad reputation because of hooligan-ism, rape-charges, corruption, sexy-dance videos etc.
I find this video on a self-proclaimed western guru very very entertaining with utterly disgusting information:
Kill for Love Devotees: And, my personal favorite are devotees, who believe very zealously that beloved God was born in a particular place. God is supposed to be male and He apparently grew up in a particular city aptly named as a city of no-war (or no-clash or no-duality or A-yodhya). I find it very painful that these devotees of God, who is Love himself fight in- and for- this same city of no-war.
If I say we are spiritual, then I would love to add we are very peculiarly spiritual. And, I would not.
If I say we are not spiritual, then it would be an outrageous lie! Bring me a dog or a pig or human or some dust, which is not spiritual - And I will give you myself.
Well, let us see... we indeed have plenty of spiritual-historians, who love to extol about our spirituality and dwell more on past than present.

Where is this spiritual magic-land? The truth remains that I myself seek that place where likes of Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi walked, where Kabir sang ecstatically, and blind Surdas saw the most wonderous sights! I look for the place where numerous humble Sufi saints found Love abound! After all where is this magical land of Truth, where likes of Paul Brunton, Maurice Frydman, Arthur Osborne found the Love-Truth?
That secret place is not India, east of Indus river, and so it seems to me.
Where is it? I don't know.
I have a pact with my best friend that we will be the last-together to get enlightened. So, we can't possibly know before you do. Please let me know, when you find that city of Beloved (the Dil-li).
On name of Arunai, I would like to pause this tongue now, with this beautiful song expressing my own failings:
Here are the translations from icantexplainitall, who sort of explains it all :D - http://icantexplainitall.blogspot.in/2008/08/jaane-woh-kaise-pyaasa.html
